This year make a commitment to recycle rather than throw away!
Put items which can be recycled into piles and arrange for pick-up
or deliver them to the following organizations.
Paper Goods: Newspapers, magazines, boxes,
phone books.
All of these items can be placed in your regular recycling bin. Large
items, i.e., boxes, must be broken down to 2 feet by 2 feet pieces.
They can be tied together and placed by your recycling bin. The recycler
will pick them up and put them in the truck. If you have large quantities
of these materials plan to place them out over a period of a few weeks.
Household Chemical Waste:
Visit the SWALCO website for
the dates and time of the next collection event. Otherwise they now
allow drop offs at their facility - by
appointment. Contact SWALCO at
947.336.9340 to set up an appointment. Materials accepted at HCW
collection events are: oil based paint,
solvents, unwanted prescriptions, medicines, and supplements, motor
oil, household cleaners, household batteries, antifreeze, garden/lawn
chemicals, pool chemicals, asbestos, fluorescent light bulbs, old
gasoline, fungicides, insecticides, pesticides, metal polishes, paint
remover, driveway sealer, drain cleaner, aerosol products, hobby
chemicals, mercury - including thermometers and thermostats.
The following materials are not accepted
at HCW collections: business/institutional wastes, fire extinguishers,
explosives/ammunition, lead-acid batteries, agricultural chemicals,
tires, fireworks, latex paint, propane tanks, smoke detectors,
medical wastes, household electronics.
Latex Paint:
Latex paint is not accepted at household chemical recycling events
any more. Latex paint can be prepared and placed in with your regular
trash. To prepare the paint for disposal you must let it dry out.
If it is a large can, you can put kitty litter or crushed corn cob
(corn cob available at the Village Hall at no charge) in the paint
to absorb the water. Let it harden and throw it in the trash.
Clothing and Household Items:
There are a number of charitable organizations in our area that would
appreciate receiving your discarded clothing or household items.
In addition, you can take a tax deduction on your income tax for
your donation. Following are just a few of these organizations:
