Garden Spot - Lincolnshire
is Truly a Garden Spot - June 2004
A GARDEN SPOT, as defined by the dictionary, is a fertile, well
cultivated, delightful place. Lincolnshire is truly a garden
spot. Residents take great pride in their properties. Whether
an avid gardener who passes every spare moment tending to flower-shrub
planting beds, or simply a home owner committed to keeping the
yard tidy and attractive, most residences contribute significantly
to the overall beauty of this community.
Lincolnshire’s public gardens, both formal and native,
are an additional source of horticultural pleasure and pride.
Streetscape and park gardens contain shrubs and perennials which
provide season-long beauty and interest. The plantings in these
beds are selected for their ability to adapt to the most severe
climate challenges of the Chicagoland area, as well as to the
specific conditions of each individual location. In addition,
these formal gardens are carefully maintained to optimize each
plant’s ability to flourish.
In contrast to these carefully manicured gardens are Lincolnshire’s
many native restorations areas. Village Staff spends endless
hours not in the selection of plant material, but in the removal
of invasive and noxious plant material like buckthorn and garlic
mustard so that plants which are native to this region can flourish.
Sometimes simply removing these invaders allows dormant native
seedlings to emerge; other times it is necessary to reseed or
plant native “plugs”. In any case the results of
their efforts can be seen in areas such as Rivershire Park, Florsheim,
and North Park Preserves, and the banks of Spring Lake begin
to emerge as areas of great natural beauty.
On June 13, 2004, the Village and The Lincolnshire Garden Club
will provide the opportunity to celebrate the beauty of Lincolnshire’s
many gardens. The 4th Village of Lincolnshire Garden Walk will
be a daylong celebration of residential and public horticultural
achievement.
