Garden Spot - The
Village and the Lincolnshire Garden Club - November 2004
Residents often ask garden staff if they are members of the Garden Club. While
most often the laborers you see in the gardens are paid staff or contracted
labor, the Village and the Garden Club have long been partners in creating
the Village's formal streetscape and park gardens. In fact, the Village's early
streetscape gardens and the gardens at Balzer, Whytegate, and Spring Lake Parks
were designed, installed, and maintained for a time by members of the Garden
Club. Many of the hardiest and most beautiful plantings we use in our gardens
today were first recommended and used by these talented gardeners.
The Garden Club’s contributions do not end there. The
Butterfly Garden at Rivershire Park (summer, 2000) was designed,
installed, and financed by Club members. Whenever the Village
asks for volunteers to work in either the gardens or in the naturalized
areas, Garden Club members are often involved in the volunteer
group. In addition, the Village receives a generous allocation
each year from the Club to continue its work in developing Florsheim
Park, Memorial Park, and other horticultural areas. A new arbor,
which will surround the picnic table at Whytegate Children's
Garden, is its latest gift. Another new collaboration between
the Village and the Garden Club is the bi-annual Village Garden
Walk.
The Garden Club's partnership with the Village is essential
and greatly appreciated.
When do I stop watering my new plantings?
What is the deadline for planting bulbs?
The answer to both of these questions is the same: when the
ground freezes. Bulbs can be planted as long as you can dig the
hole. New plants need their 1" of water until the ground
freezes and they go dormant.
As always, questions and concerns regarding gardening can be
addressed by calling the Village Hall at 847.883.8600. |
