Intersection of Route 22 and 21 Construction Updates
September 17, 2009
As part of the reconstruction of the intersection
at Route 22 and US45/IL21 (Milwaukee Avenue) the contractor
has reconfigured the lane locations throughout the intersection
in all directions.
The contractor has moved into phase I of the construction,
and completed the temporary pavement installation,
reconfiguration of the traffic patterns, and activation of temporary
traffic signals. The contractor is now performing
utility installations and relocations as well as pavement removals
throughout the project. Due to the nature of this
project, traffic congestion is expected throughout the duration
of the project. However, the Village has requested
that lDOT review the global function of the traffic signals in
the area to ensure optimum traffic flow. lDOT is
reviewing specific areas of concern during peak traffic times
to determine whether or not to initiate changes.
This configuration is expected to remain in-place
throughout much of the remainder of this year. The projected
completion for this project remains July 20 IO. However, please
remain cautious through the construction zone as
the traffic patterns may occur without notice.
Due to the impact of the construction at this intersection,
we strongly recommend allowing yourself extra time to
get through the construction zone, or consider alternate
routes. As always, the Village will pass along information
to you as it is provided.
As a reminder, reduced speed limits are in effect
24/7 in this and all construction zones, whether or not workers
are
present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing
traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers
are present. Police agencies have zero tolerance for drivers
speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for
speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise motorists
of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for
hitting a roadway worker.
