Flooding
There are three main flood hazard areas in Lincolnshire: The
Des Plaines River, Indian Creek, and the West Fork of the North
Branch of the Chicago River. Flooding in these locations has typically
occurred in the spring or the fall. It has been several years since
any home in Lincolnshire has sustained damage from rising flood
waters but some residents have experienced problems associated
with heavy rains, i.e., sump pump failures, sewer backup, etc.
While the Village cannot prevent flooding, we do take several
steps to reduce its impact. Before a project is constructed, Village
Staff works with the developer to ensure that the proposed project
minimizes the impact to adjacent properties. A new project must
meet the stringent guidelines established in the Village Code,
Lake County Watershed Development Ordinance, and other regulations
established at the state and federal levels.
The Village participates in the National
Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Community
Rating System, which is a program to ensure that the Village
maintains minimum national standards with regard to floodplain
regulations.
Information Available on Maintaining
Wetlands & Stormwater Management Systems
Homeowners’ Associations and individual residents can contribute
to the health of the Village’s wetlands and stormwater management
systems. The Village maintains a reference library with helpful information.
Two such publications, "A Citizen's Guide to Maintaining Stormwater
Best Management Practices" and "Living With Wetlands: A Handbook
for Homeowners in Northeastern Illinois" are available for review
at the Village Hall for interested persons. Contact Village Engineer
Jennifer Hughes to view a copy of these publications. These documents
are also available for download at www.lakecountyil.gov/stormwater/publications.
