Information Available on Maintaining
Wetlands and Stormwater Management Systems
Because we live in a watershed, we impact water
runoff from rain. Our
impact can negatively affect the quality of our streams and rivers.
Homeowners Associations and individual residents
can contribute to the
health of the Village’s wetlands and stormwater management
systems. In
fact, most homeowners associations are responsible for maintaining
the
drainage ways within their subdivision. Residents can take steps
to keep
contaminated water on their property. This can be done by directing
water
runoff from our roofs, sump pumps and driveways into rain barrels,
rain
gardens, open vegetated swales or other features where that water
can be
used in a constructive way or absorbed by plants. Residents should
consider installing plants on their property that are native
to our area. These plants
require less watering and absorb more water than many non-native
plants.
The Village maintains a reference library with
information to assist you in making a positive impact on
our environment. Two such publications: A "Citizen's Guide
to Maintaining Stormwater Best Management Practices"
and "Living With
Wetlands: A Handbook for Homeowners in Northeastern
Illinois" are available at the Village Hall.
The Village has enacted regulations prohibiting the introduction
of pollutants
or chemicals into the storm sewers as these pipes lead to open
waterways.
